Older half-brother of Walter Raleigh; Oxford-trainedand soldier in Irleand and Holland; one of Elizabeth's courtiers and "sea dogs." Pushed for a Northwest Passage to Indies in the 1560s-70s. Author of Discourse of Discovery for new Passage to China (1566). Made two attempts at Northwest Passage, in 1578, in the company of Walter Raleigh, and in 1584,which also involved a plan to plant settlers in Maine, during which he perished at sea.
