Rhode Island shipowner and politician from Providence; attended Albany Union Congress in 1754, Continental Congress, 1774-76, and signed the Declaration of Independence. Active in resistance to British taxation policies in 1760s as RI governor and author of Rights of the Colonies Examined (1764). Instrumental in creating a Continental navy and seeing his younger brother, Esek Hopkins, made its first leader. Supported the 1774 outlawing of the importation of slaves into Rhode Island.
