Late representative of a ship type once ubiquitous in medieval northern Europe. Clinker-constructed (12 planks on each side). Rudder attached to stern; squared off stem post made beaching impossible; limited sailing angle due to single square sail and no keel. Considerable cargo capacity; a 55 ton cog could carry 95 tons of cargo. Largely displaced by hulk by better sailing hulk by late 14th century.
