Identified in Mediterranean written record dating back to 6th century BC. Archaeologists see them as an advancement over the earlier and less technically sophisticated log boat. Currachs used by St. Brendan in 6th century an instance of the type. Still in use on Aran Islands in 1900 (as per J. M. Synge)
