One of six frigates authorized by Congress in 1794 to deal with the Barbary pirates.Participated in the Quasi-War with France and the War of 1812, during which, on August 19, 1812, she defeated the HMS Guerriere, earning herself the nickname, "Old Ironsides," for the ability of its oak hull to absorb cannon shot.
